Where did this story start?

Inspired by travels both external and internal. With a dream to create a space in Cape Town that combined the things I feel passionate about. Namely Surfing, Yoga, Meditation and Community. A dream led to a plan, and good luck led me to this historical building on the beach at the rapidly rejuvenating Muizenberg. With some minor renovations and a vision of how it can be,  a team of like-minded Teachers found their way to our door and began sharing their energy with the space and the students.

Its no frills, no fluff. Not a retreat , but real. Just a room with a view, and some great people sharing their passion for YOU to grow, as they deepen their own practice. Its what YOU make of it, go as deep as you like, or just have a good stretch, their is no wrong when you start working WITH yourself.

Born in Cape Town but spending many years exploring the world, Jamie is a passionate surfer, writer, yogi & entrepeneur with a special interest in Energy and how we engage with it.

Happily married to his Artist wife with a young son Max & hound Mowgli living in the cold-water paradise of Kommetjie. A combination of whacky ideas, adventurous observation and a burning desire to create something new & positive, have resulted in the founding of African Soul Surfer in 2014. Its a space that incorporates the joys of Surfing, Art, Mind/Body & Travel, all rolled into one.

Johann Kotze is one of the most experienced yoga teachers in Cape Town. He has shared his practical and philosophical interest in yoga since 1990 with 1 000’s of students. Getting beginners going with the essentials of an effective yoga practice is one of his specialities. Johann also makes it his mission to present the powerful advanced skills of yoga in an accessible way to all levels of practitioners. His gentle power flow vinayasa style is a mix of modern and traditional elements, influenced by his Sivananda yoga teachers qualification and extensive therapeutic yoga training from the same school. I have been studying the art of Chi Gung for 5 years and went to China in 2014 to further my knowledge.
The ancient Chinese art of Chi Gung dates back to over 7000 years ago and has over 2000 different forms.
I teach a mixture of about 6 forms depending on the experience of the student.
Chi Gung translates directly to energy work. The Chinese believe that all disease come from energy/ chi blockages of the meridians. These blockages are cause by negative emotions anger fear stress etc. Each of the 12 meridians is linked to a specific emotion. If these blockages/ stagnant chi are not cleared they can manifest into disease and cancer. Chi Gung has a similar effect to acupuncture without the needles and no experience is necessary to gain the positive effects.
My classes include guided meditation for beginners, breath work, grounding and slow movement while remaining focused and in control of the mind.

Dougy, as he’s known to everyone at the camp, is a lifelong surfer with over 30 years spent in the ocean riding waves, and one of the most stoked individuals you will ever meet! Not many people surf, or love surfing more than this gently Soul. His shortboard is a 9fter, and loves the long waves outfront!

Having trained as a Surf Coach with The Surf Shack in Muizenberg many years ago, we were fortunate to head-hunt him and have his vast experience join our team. Doug has literally taught 1000’s of people to surf, and puts the emphasis on Fun, and enjoying the experience, above getting results. His motto is ‘Have fun first, you’ll get more waves!’

I took on the practice of ashtanga/vinyasa flow and started teaching under the guidance of a renowned Dutch yogi. I have since qualified in Hatha Iyengar, allowing an influence of kundalini and former teachings of vinyasa in every class.
